SMHI

Swedish Meteorological and Hydrological Institute

SMHI, the Swedish Meteorological and Hydrological Institute, is an expert agency under the Ministry of Climate and Enterprise of Sweden. SMHI manage and develop information about weather, water, and climate, providing the public sector, business community, and the general public with knowledge and qualified decision-making support. SMHI collaborates daily with authorities and organisations both in Sweden and internationally.

SMHI's research department consists of researchers with a wide-ranging and comprehensive expertise in meteorology, hydrology, oceanography and climate. Since the whole society is affected by changes in weather, water and climate, research and advanced modelling are required to predict developments and create a resilient society. The research from SMHI helps decision-makers at many levels of society to make informed and science-based decisions for a future-proof and safe society.

SMHI's oceanographic research unit has expertise in a number of areas related to marine research, such as marine biology, marine observations, numerical modelling and remote sensing. Their research is based on oceanography and links the physics of the sea with biological, geological and chemical processes in the ocean. With about 25 specialists, also in fields as mathematics and computer programming, they increase society's knowledge of the state of the sea to facilitate sustainable management of the ocean.
