Météo-France

Météo-France’s missions are diverse. Its primary mission is to observe weather conditions and forecast those to come. Forecasting relies in particular on the development of increasingly powerful numerical weather prediction models, made possible by the ever-growing capabilities of supercomputers.

Protecting people and property is another key mission of the institution. In particular, Météo-France operates the Vigilance warning system, providing information to citizens and public authorities in the event of hazardous weather phenomena. The institution also provides its expertise to support the safety of air transport throughout French territory. Lastly, Météo-France contributes to national defence, maritime safety, and environmental protection through air quality monitoring.

Climate research is also a major mission, aimed at preserving knowledge of past climate conditions, monitoring ongoing changes, and anticipating future climate developments.

Météo-France is also committed to continuously advancing scientific knowledge. Extensive research activities carried out within its scientific centres contribute to a deeper understanding of climate processes, based both on its own scientific strategy and on close collaborations with the wider scientific community.

Finally, the institution provides meteorological data and services to public and private stakeholders, as well as to citizens, in particular to support decision-making in the context of climate change.
